Why do we sleep? Why do we spend a third of our lives sleeping? Would we be happier if scientists find a way to let us stay awake longer? Although it is difficult to answer these questions, let us imagine that scientists developed several ways to let us stay awake longer.
In the first place, sleep takes a third of our lives since we sleep eight hours daily. So, we spend a long part of our life without doing anything just laying on the bed. It would be nice to limit the number of hours we spend in bed and dreaming. Then we could get so more done. Busy people sometimes regard sleep as a waste of time. They take time away from sleep to tend affairs of the day. For example, Napoleon,
Florence Nightingale
and Margaret Thatcher
got by on four hours a night.
Also, Thomas Edison claimed it was waste of time unless we stay awake at longer hours in night.
In the same way, just in case sleep time is reduced, in fact, scientists would have time to find cures for cancer, diabetes and other treatments to prevent suffering and early death. As well as, we would have scientific progress, additional urban constructions, new literatures, extra arts, better music and all human needs would be resolved in shorter time. Likewise, the students would have longer time to completed their homework and do what they like to do in the rest of their time.
Equally important, in case we get more time to stay awake, that means we can do our regular responsibilities and find time to work out, visit our friends, watch TV, and get more hours of entertainment with the family. We would also have more time to go to parties and enjoy our lives, so this would enhance our social and intimate relationships.
Comparatively, we know that sleep is an essential life process and as important to our well- being as the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe, but we can rely on the scientist’s way to let us stay awake longer. Perhaps we would miss the wonderful lazy Saturday morning spent in bed dreaming lovely dreams.
All things considered, we will be fortunate if scientists find way to help humans stay awake longer without feeling tired if we don’t get enough sleep. It would be nice if we could limit the amount of sleep we need to only a couple of hours a day so we would have more time to do the things we enjoy or to make money. Of course, we will be happier if we stay awake longer.
